This is a interesting article that shows how more than half of American ignore Internet advertising.  Of the 63%, 43% ignore banners, and 20% ignore search engine ads.  Although there seems to be little difference between men and women, education appears to play a significant role in a person’s attention to Internet advertising.  I would argue that contextual in-text links are more effective than traditional banners and text ads that people have been trained to ignore.
